[ARCHIVED] Free Diversity & Equity training available for local small businesses

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC - Employers or non-profits in New Hanover County with 35 or fewer people on staff can sign-up for classes focused on diversity and equity in the workplace set to take place in March, April and May.

Two sessions of each training will be held via Zoom and are being hosted by New Hanover County's Office of Diversity and Equity free of charge. Organizations wishing to sign-up can do so online.

"We know it can be difficult for smaller, local businesses or non-profits to find affordable and effective training related to diversity and equity. Because of that, we wanted to help," said Chief Diversity and Equity Officer Linda Thompson. "Since our office was established in 2020, we have taken great pride in helping integrate training related to diversity and equity throughout the county workplace. We hope these classes take some of the things we practice every day at New Hanover County Government and make them relatable and practical for our community's small businesses and non-profits."

The first classes offered will take place on March 1 and 15, focusing on Implicit Bias in the Workplace. This class with look at what implicit bias is, where it stems from and how it can be addressed.

On April 12 and 26, classes will focus on Creating an Inclusive Workplace. These sessions will center around ways that increased inclusion can lead to improved productivity, decreased turnover and helping employees be their authentic selves.

The final classes will review Microaggressions on May 10 and 17. Microaggressions are commonplace verbal, behavioral or environmental slights that communicate hostile or negative attitudes towards marginalized groups. This class will focus on how to identify and reduce microaggressions.
