NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – Visitors to the New Hanover County Landfill will soon have a larger and more efficient site to dispose of trash and other waste materials.
Starting Monday, November 27, the new customer convenience center at the landfill will open to the public, offering easier unloading of materials along with amenities like a household hazardous waste collection site and textile recycling. The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners and county staff held a ribbon cutting on November 20 to get a sneak peek of the center before it opens.
“One of the biggest things we heard from customers about the drop-off process for waste was that the site could get congested easily and there was no clear traffic pattern,” said Recycling and Solid Waste Director Joe Suleyman. “That was something we wanted to address with an easy-to-understand traffic pattern and with multiple spots to drop things off. Additionally, we added some features, like our shredder, which will make disposing of larger objects like mattresses or furniture much easier.”
Customers looking to bring materials to the landfill will still visit the weigh station upon entry and pay station before exiting. Signage clearly marking the path from the front gate to the new convenience center will guide visitors down the road and around the corner to the material disposal area, with staff directing customers where to go based on what is being dropped off.
