Welcome to the New Hanover County Register of Deeds web site. The Register of Deeds is responsible for recording, indexing, preserving and maintaining real property documents. We also file Financing Statements, (UCC's), Maps, Vital Records, Notary Public records, and many miscellaneous legal records such as Powers of Attorney, Separation Agreements, and business names in accordance with North Carolina General Statutes and local ordinances. The department assists attorneys, paralegals, realtors, surveyors, banking officers, and the general public with the retrieval of these permanent records and issue certified copies to the recipient.

It is the mission of the Register of Deeds to preserve the integrity of these records and to make them readily accessible to you. I invite you to browse these pages and learn more about the Register of Deeds office. Please contact us if we can be of service to you. It is a pleasure to serve you.

Important Notice!

One of our main goals is to provide citizens with free access to the public record using the most up-to-date and user-friendly information technology available.  At this time we are continuing our project to upgrade the current software, hardware and web application to meet this goal. Simultaneously, the NC Indexing Standards updated in late 2011 and slated to take effect July 1, 2012 must be incorporated into the new system as well as an upgraded web search to accommodate these standards .These new guidelines have proven a challenge to the internal code of our current and upgraded software.

Our go-live date will not occur until we are confident that our software is fully tested and functioning to the standard of excellence that our users expect. Until then, the New Hanover County Register of Deeds Office will not adopt the new NC Indexing Standards. We will provide uninterrupted access to our site as we continue to test and prepare for our conversion to our new software.

We strive to look for new and better ways to serve the citizens so we welcome your comments and suggestions.
