Notice: Beginning December 1, 2005 the law changed in NC that would allow for certain personal information to be redacted under guidelines set out in NCGS 132-1.10(f).
Some of the guidelines are as follows:
The request must be in writing, legibly signed by the requester or their power of attorney, delivered by mail, facsimile, electronic transmission, or delivered in person to the register specifying (1) the personal information to be redacted (2) the document containing the information re: book, page, instrument number, and (3)unique information that identifies the location within the document at which the information can be located. Only the identified personal information will be removed for the internet Website.

Notice: Fee Changes Effective Oct. 1,2011
Session Law 2011-296 (S 384) modifies the fees for recording instruments and simplifies their allocation to state accounts. For more information please see
Land Records Bulletin 35.
1. The fees for recording Instruments except deeds of trust and mortgages will be $26 for the first 15 pages and $4 each additional page.
2. Deeds of trust and mortgages will be $56 for the first 15 pages and $4 each additional page.
3. There will no longer be an additional fee for verification (currently $2.00)
4. Additional subsequent instrument index reference is $10 each on assignments only.
Recording
The Recording Department of the Register of Deeds office is located at 216 North Second Street in Room 4. The office is open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The recording hours are 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. All documents presented for recording must meet the following standards:
Vital Records
The Vital Records Department is located at 216 North Second Street in room 2 and 3. Their hours are 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., however Marriage licenses are not issued after 4:45 p.m. Please see pages on Marriage Licenses, Birth and Death certificates for more information. This office also files DD214's which are military discharges.
