(New Hanover County)— New Hanover County residents should mark their calendars and start cleaning out the garage for the annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Day, Saturday, March 30th from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
This rain or shine event will be held at Wilmington International Airport – Customs Building, located at 1921 Hall Drive. Improper disposal of HHW is harmful to our health and natural resources. HHW that is not disposed of properly may pollute our streams, rivers, drinking water and groundwater. This waste can also interfere with the treatment process at the landfill and wastewater treatment plants.
The following items WILL be accepted at the HHW Event:
||Motor Oil & Antifreeze|
||Pesticides & Herbicides|
||Electronics (TV's, Computers, etc.)|
||Rechargeable Household Batteries|
The following items WILL NOT be accepted at the HHW event:
||Propane Gas Cylinders|
||SHARPS (hypodermic needles)|
Many items can be brought to the New Hanover County Landfill year-round. Auto batteries, motor oil/antifreeze, appliances, sharps and up to 5 tires per household (no businesses) can be dropped off at no cost.
The landfill is located at 5210 US Highway 421 North, and is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 6:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Liquid paint needs to be solidified by mixing sand or kitty litter with it to speed up the drying process. It can then be collected with the normal household waste. Please call 910-798-4400 for more details.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day is coordinated by the Environmental Management Department of New Hanover County, City of Wilmington, Cape Fear Public Utility Authority, Town of Wrightsville Beach, Keep America Beautiful of New Hanover County and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture.
