Registration packets are available now through April 2 at the NHC Senior Resource Center, 2222 South College Road.  Senior Games by the Sea Athletic and SilverArts competition will be held April 12-30.  Persons 55 and older are eligible to compete in 40 events.  Registration $10 thru March 15 or $15 thru April 2.  Contact Tiffany Lesley, 341-7253 or seniorgamesbythesea@gmail.com

The Civically Engaged Reader is the title of the new anthology that a library Great Books group will begin discussing at Northeast Library on March 22. It's a great time for new members to join this group!

The Civically Engaged Reader contains 47 essays, stories, speeches and poems about what it means to be civic minded, by a diverse group of authors that includes Aristotle, Maya Angelou, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Langston Hughes, Pablo Neruda, and many more. The main themes are Associating, Serving, Giving, and Leading. The group will discuss one or more selections each month until they have worked their way through the book. 

The Great Books in the Morning group meets on the 4th Monday of each month at 10:30 am, at the Northeast Regional Library, 1241 Military Cutoff Rd. Copies of the Civically Engaged Reader have been bought by the Friends of the LIbrary and group members may borrow them at the Northeast Library checkout desk.

Finding Financial Aid for College @ New Hanover County Public Library

April Morey with College Foundation of North Carolina will explain applying for college financial aid by filling out the FAFSA form at a free information session at the Northeast Regional Library on March 1. High school students and their parents are encouraged to bring their questions.

College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) is a free service of the State of North Carolina that helps students plan, apply, and pay for college. CFNC is a partnership of Pathways, the N.C. State Education Assistance Authority, and College Foundation, Inc. Many helpful services are available online at www.cfnc.org.

The program will be March 1, at 6 pm in the Pine Room at Northeast Regional Library, 1241 Military Cutoff Rd. No reservations are needed.

The NHC Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing at a special meeting on Wednesday, March 24 at 9:00 am.  The purpose of the meeting is to hold a public hearing regarding a development moratorium of 60 days or shorter period on internet gaming establishments. The New Hanover County Department of Emergency Management will host our annual hurricane exercise on May 4-May 5, 2010. On May 4th, exercise play will be simulated. On May 5th, please report to the alternate Emergency Operations Center location which will be at the NHC Sheriff’s Office Annex E, Weekend Jail. The exercise will run from 8:00AM until 3:00PM with a critique session to follow.
