Grant Trains Seniors to Use Computers @ Your Library
Monday - Thursday, 10 am - 3:00 pm, through June 2010

Senior citizens and persons with disabilities can come to the Main Library for free computer coaching, thanks to a grant United Way of the Cape Fear Area has just received from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act!

Peer coach Barbara Brodbeck is in the computer lab on the Main Library's third floor for several hours a day, four days a week, ready to tutor fellow seniors who want to practice using a computer and searching the Internet.

The Civically Engaged Reader is the title of the new anthology that a library Great Books group will begin discussing at Northeast Library on March 22. It's a great time for new members to join this group!

The Civically Engaged Reader contains 47 essays, stories, speeches and poems about what it means to be civic minded, by a diverse group of authors that includes Aristotle, Maya Angelou, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Langston Hughes, Pablo Neruda, and many more. The main themes are Associating, Serving, Giving, and Leading. The group will discuss one or more selections each month until they have worked their way through the book. 

The Great Books in the Morning group meets on the 4th Monday of each month at 10:30 am, at the Northeast Regional Library, 1241 Military Cutoff Rd. Copies of the Civically Engaged Reader have been bought by the Friends of the LIbrary and group members may borrow them at the Northeast Library checkout desk.

Finding Financial Aid for College @ New Hanover County Public Library

April Morey with College Foundation of North Carolina will explain applying for college financial aid by filling out the FAFSA form at a free information session at the Northeast Regional Library on March 1. High school students and their parents are encouraged to bring their questions.

College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) is a free service of the State of North Carolina that helps students plan, apply, and pay for college. CFNC is a partnership of Pathways, the N.C. State Education Assistance Authority, and College Foundation, Inc. Many helpful services are available online at www.cfnc.org.

The program will be March 1, at 6 pm in the Pine Room at Northeast Regional Library, 1241 Military Cutoff Rd. No reservations are needed.

A prescribed burn of underbrush is planned for New Hanover County’s Castle Hayne Park on Friday, March 5, weather conditions permitting. 

 

Castle Hayne Park is a 30 acre recreational facility located off Parmele Road in the Castle Hayne community.  (See attached maps)  The exact date and time of the controlled burn will be announced as short-term weather forecasts permit officials to proceed.  All efforts will be taken to notify nearby residents through news media, the New Hanover County website (www.nhcgov.com), New Hanover County Television and through the county’s reverse 911 system.

 

During the burn, which should take several hours, the park will be closed to the public.

Greg Melville, author of Greasy Rider, a book about driving across the US on used fry oil, will speak at 1 pm. Alternative fuel vehicles on display from 11 am to 3 pm. All happening at CFCC's North Campus on Blue Clay Rd.
