​General Communicable Disease

The New Hanover County Health Department is responsible for the investigation of reportable communication diseases in accordance with NC General Statutes 130A-144.

  • The purpose of a communicable disease investigation is to protect public health. For instance, the department researches the source of an outbreak and prevents the illness from being spread.
     

  • The diseases that are required to be reported can be found at www.epi.state.nc.us/epi under Communicable Disease​

  • Public Health Nurses monitor case reports of communicable diseases from physicians, health care providers, laboratories, child care facilities, schools and restaurants in New Hanover County

Tuberculosis (TB) 

The health department has the responsibility and legal authority to coordinate all TB efforts in New Hanover County.

 
  • Services provided by Public Health Nurses:

    .  TB skin testing
    .  Chest X-rays referrals
    .  Clinical evaluation
    .  TB medicines – furnished at no cost

TB Skin Test Hours:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 7:45am - 4:30pm
TB Skin Tests must be read 48-72 hours after they are placed.
