Effective July 1st, 2011 televisions and computers were banned from disposal in North Carolina landfills. The intention of the ban is to remove harmful metals found in electronics from potentially entering groundwater and surface waters across the State.
New Hanover County residents and non-profit organizations (with documentation of non-profit status) may bring their electronics to the New Hanover County Landfill free of charge. Electronic waste from area businesses is not accepted through this program.

There is no limit on the quantity of electronics that will be accepted from residents and non-profits. Items accepted include:
  • computers (printers, CPU’s, etc.)
  • televisions
  • cell phones (including charger)
  • anything with a power cord
The electronics waste recycler ensures the proper removal of hazardous materials like lead, mercury, cadmium, and cathode ray tubes (CRTs). The recycler also ensures that all computer hard drives are destroyed. For additional information please contact Lynn Bestul at 910-798-4410.
