Can anyone obtain information on file at the Register of Deeds office?
A.
Yes, all records filed in the Register of Deeds office are public records. Anyone can view and obtain a copy of a public document in the office.
Q.
How do I remove or add a name to a deed?
A.
You will have to have a new deed drawn up and filed. It is recommended that you consult an attorney.
Q.
Can you tell me if a lien has been removed from a piece of property?
A.
You will need to consult an attorney. We do not perform title searches.
Q.
How do I obtain a copy of my divorce?
A.
Divorces are on file in the Clerk of Superior Court's office.
Q.
Can I come in and fill out a form to register my business name?
A.
No, we do not furnish forms. Please see the Assumed Name page.

How can I obtain a copy of the map of my property?
A.
We have subdivision and condominium plats on file, not individual surveys.
Q.
Can you recommend an attorney?
A.
No, North Carolina law prohibits the Register of Deeds from giving legal advice or referrals.
Q.
Can you tell me how much a piece of property sold for?
A.
We can only tell you the amount of the excise tax stamp affixed to the deed at the time it was recorded.
Q.
What are excise stamps?
A.
A tax of $1.00 per $500.00 (more easily calculated as $2.00 per $1,000.00) of the purchase price is mandated by NC state law to be paid by the grantor or seller.
Q.
Can you tell me when my house was built and it's square footage?
A.
No, that information may be obtained from the Tax Department.
Q.
Do you file Wills?
A.
No, they are filed in the Estate division of the Clerk of Superior Court's office.

There is a minor error on the document I recorded yesterday. What can I do?
A.
