General Information

The land records department of the Register of Deeds office is located in the EMS Building at 216 North Second Street in room 4. The office is open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  The recording hours are 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.  The office does not close for lunch.

All documents presented for recording must have the name and phone number of the person the original document will be returned to.  All deeds and deeds of trust must have the name of the draftsman on the front page of the document, and all conveyances of land must have the tax ID number on the front page. This number can be obtained from the land records department of the county tax office, telephone 910-798-7300. If it is necessary for you to re-record a document in the case of a minor error on your original recorded document, you will need to attach an explanation statement to your original document.  A certified copy cannot be re-recorded, it must be the complete original document.  See fee schedule page for recording fees and excise tax information.

The Vital Records Department is located in the EMS Building at 216 NorthSecond Street in room 2 and 3.  Their hours are 8:30 a.m. until 4:45 p.m., however Marriage licenses are not issued after 4:00 p.m.  Please see pages on Marriage Licenses, Birth and Death certificates for more information.  This office also files DD214's which are military discharges.

 Parking on the street is very limited.  There is a parking deck on 2nd Street between Princess and Chestnut Streets.
