TELECOMMUNICATOR (NON-TEMPORARY & TEMPORARY)
PUBLIC SAFETY COMMUNICATIONS CENTER

Minimum salary during training for non-temporary:  $26,437 (subject to increases for up to 1 year) + excellent benefits
Minimum salary after training for non-temporary:  $29,224 + excellent benefits

Training salary for temporary:  $12.71 per hour; no benefits
Salary after training for temporary:  $14.05 per hour; no benefits

 


Continuously accepting applications for non-temporary and part-time temporary telecommunicators who receive and ascertain the nature of emergency calls while retrieving and entering data via computer; dispatch appropriate emergency medical services, law enforcement, and fire department personnel to emergency scenes; log calls and maintain records; answer non-emergency calls; operate the Division/Criminal Information (DCI) computer. Requires a high school diploma/GED and 1 year of related experience involving a high level of public contact and preferably using communications equipment such as a two-way radio and computers in a high stress setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to obtain CPR, DCI operator and emergency medical dispatch certifications and certification as a justice officer by the NC Sheriff Standards Division within 1 year of employment. Knowledge of Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) desired. Knowledge of county streets, highways and waterways required. Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus.

Hours: Must be available for rotating shifts from 7AM-7PM or 7PM-7AM, including weekends and holidays (hours per week vary for part-time temporary positions.

**Pre-employment drug screening and criminal background check required.**

A new application must be submitted every 90 days to remain in the active file. As requests from the department are approved, current applications will be screened for either the non-temporary or temporary positions. Selected applicants who are referred to the department must take a typing and standardized telecommunicator test. Applicants who successfully pass these tests and the remaining steps in the interview process will be placed on an eligibility list. As vacancies become available, applicants on this list will first be considered. Newly hired applicants will be paid the minimum of the trainee range and may be eligible to receive increases within the range for up to 1 year, depending on successful completion of each training phase. Upon successfully completing the training program, the salary will increase to the minimum of the salary range for the position.
