The Middle Sound community is considered the area of unincorporated New Hanover County located off of Market Street containing the neighborhoods surrounding Middle Sound Loop Road. The area is bordered on the west by Market Street and on the east by the Intracoastal Waterway. The community historically has been primarily residential with low-density development. For the most part, the community has retained this somewhat rural atmosphere. Surrounded by water, the Middle Sound area is home to several marinas and water-dependent communities.
In 1987, a neighborhood plan was written for the Middle Sound community. CLICK HERE to view the 1987 Middle Sound Plan in its entirety. The plan addressed three critical areas of concern in the community: traffic, development, and the environment. Intended as a policy guide for the future growth and development of the community, the plan contains action items associated with the 1986 Wilmington-New Hanover Land Use Plan.
The planning process involved several steps which included identifying the study area, involving the community for much-needed input, and generating a plan that encompassed the data and community input generated during the planning process.
