Big Sweep is an annual cleanup of our waterways and is a part of the International Coastal Cleanup. In New Hanover County, 679 volunteers picked up 4,000 pounds of litter and debris during the event held in 2009. The most common items found were:

A special thanks goes to the Town of Wrightsville Beach, the City of Wilmington, the Town of Carolina Beach, the Town of Kure Beach, the Pleasure Island Parrotheads, the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher, Cape Fear River Watch, the NC Coastal Land Trust, Surfrider Foundation, and the YMCA Triathlon for their work with coordinating the cleanup sites.
