Adulticiding
When mosquito populations based on light trap data reaches a threshold that may cause a public health threat or a nuisance to New Hanover County residents, adulticiding is implemented. New Hanover County utilizes Ultra-Low Volume sprayers mounted on the back of trucks to control adult mosquitoes. New Hanover County is divided into twenty-eight spray zones. Avoiding mosquito control spraying:
Although a person’s chances of experiencing any health effects from mosquito spraying are quite low, it is wise to take the following steps to reduce exposures to insecticides during spraying:
- Pay attention to the local media for announcements about spraying and remain indoors during applications in the immediate area.
- People who suffer from chemical sensitivities or feel spraying may aggravate a preexisting health condition, may consult their physician or local health department and take special measures to avoid exposure.
- Close windows and turn off window-unit air conditioners when spraying is taking place in the immediate area.
- Do not let children play near or behind truck-mounted applicators when they are in use.
