The Customer Care Team consists of Switchboard/Scheduling Operators, Registration Staff, Interpreters, and Medical Records Staff.
Switchboard/Scheduling - Switchboard Operators receive calls from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments are scheduled for Women’s Preventative Health, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, HIV testing, and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Programs. Registration-Registration hours are from 7:45 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. All patients will check-in at the Sign-In desk and will proceed through the registration process. All clients must bring their Photo ID, Insurance, Medicaid and/or Medicare cards. Medical Records – The Medical Records staff is responsible for maintaining and securing patient medical records. Additionally, they process requests for Releases of Information from clients needing copies of their medical records including immunizations. To obtain a copy of medical records or immunizations a Release of Information Form must be completed and a Photo ID must be verified. There is a $5.00 fee for copies of medical records and a $2.00 fee for copies of immunizations. For more information regarding Medical Records, please call (910) 798-6763.

What are your operating hours?
The New Hanover County Health Department is open Monday – Friday with Clinic Doors opening at 7:45 a.m., and closing at 5:00 p.m; Registration process begins at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m.; Switchboard operators receive calls from 7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Do you provide Walk-In services? If so, what are your walk-in hours?
Yes, walk-in services are provided for TB skin testing, Pregnancy testing, Immunizations, X-rays (with doctor’s order) and TB and Neurology Medicine Pick-ups.
Walk-in hours are Monday-Friday, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (exception: No TB skin testing on Thursdays).
When is pregnancy testing offered?
Pregnancy tests are done as a walk-in service from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
How much is a TB skin test?
The cost of a TB skin test is $10.00, and is done as a walk-in service from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The $10.00 fee must be paid at the time of service. If an employer has an account set up with the New Hanover County Health Department the fee can be billed to the employer as long as the employee brings a letter authorizing payment. TB skin tests are fee to clients who meet established criteria. TB skin tests are not administered on Thursdays but are given Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
What do I need to bring for an appointment?
All clients must bring their Photo ID, Insurance, Medicaid, and/or Medicare cards. Household income information (paycheck stub, letter from employer, tax return, etc) is required and must be presented during the Registration process.
Are all services free at the Health Department?
No. Vaccines provided for children (normal childhood immunizations) and adults (Tetanus boosters and others meeting established criteria) provided by the State Immunization Program are free of charge. Testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases and tuberculosis (if contact/suspect/case) are also provided free of charge. Patients may also have their blood pressure checked by our nurses at no charge. Immunizations and other services see fee for patient services. Women’s Preventive Health and Child Physicals are based on the N.C. Division of Public Health Women’s and Children’s Health Section Annual Gross Family Income Sliding Fee Scale—101% to 250% of Poverty.. Please refer to ourFee Policy for more information. WIC is based on Poverty Income Guidelines provided annually by the State of North Carolina.
How do I obtain a copy of my immunization record or medical record?
New Hanover County Health Department maintains records of immunizations for clients who received their immunizations from the New Hanover County Health Department only. To obtain a copy, a Photo ID is required and a Release of Information Form must be completed (by the legal guardian or client). There is a $5.00 charge for a copy of a medical record and a $2.00 charge for a copy of an immunization record.
Can I get a copy of my child’s immunization record or medical records if they are 18?
No. When a client turns 18, he or she is responsible for their medical records.
Do I need an appointment or can I walk –in?
Appointments are needed for Women’s Preventative Health, Child Health, WIC and Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Walk-in services include: TB skin testing (no TB tests administered on Thursdays), pregnancy test; immunizations; repeat Depo shot; X-rays (with doctor’s order) and TB and Neurology medicine pickup.
Do you do employment physicals?
Yes. New Hanover County Health Department does employment physicals at a cost of $35.00(additional $10 for TB Skin Test if required). An appointment is required for this service.
Are you open on Saturday?
No. The New Hanover County Health Department is open 7:45 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. New Hanover County Health Department offers a night clinic every Tuesday for services requiring appointments. The last appointment for the night clinic is at 5:45 pm.
What is the last appointment available?

Do you do Dental Care for adults with no insurance?
No. New Hanover County Health Department currently does not have a Dental program for adults. We do, however, have a Mobile Dental Unit for children. The unit’s location varies throughout the year at a number of school sites. For information, please call (910) 512-3113.
I am going to another country do you know which shots I will need?
New Hanover County Health Department is currently developing a travel clinic. Please call Wilmington Health Associates, Travel Clinic at (910) 341-3300.
Do you do paternity testing or DNA testing?
No. New Hanover County Health Department currently does not do paternity testing or DNA testing. Healthlink does DNA Testing call 1-888-712-9639 or 1-800-330-8475.
Can grandparents or friends bring in children for services?
No. A legal guardian or parent needs to accompany children under 18 years of age in for services.
How far in advance can you schedule an appointment?
WIC appointments are scheduled one day in advance. Women’s Preventative Health, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Child Health and HIV testing/results’ (morning appointments from 8:00 am to 10:00 am) are made one week in advance. For appointments needed after 10 am, Same-Day-Appointment Scheduling begins at 7:30 am. Clients are encouraged to call at 7:30 am for the best selection in available appointment slots.
Can you send a copy of my Immunization Record to my home or place of employment?
Yes. We can mail a copy of your Immunization Record to your home or place of employment with a NOTARIZED Release of Information form received by the New Hanover County Medical Records Department. Copies of your Immunization Record may also be sent to your current Doctor’s Office or school.
How long will my appointment take?
If you have an appointment for Child Health, Women’s Preventative Health or Sexually Transmitted Disease, please plan on a minimum of 2 hours.
