Dental Health
Frequently Asked Questions

What services are provided by the Dental Health Division?

Preventive and education services are provided for all citizens of the county.  A preventive dental program that includes sealants, screening, referral, and education is operated in the schools.  Other services include: oral health assessments, referral and education for older adults; public education concerning dental disease; and a dental health rotation for Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene students at Cape Fear Community College.

At what age should I take my child for the first visit with a dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry suggests that you schedule your child’s first visit by age one, with regular visits thereafter.  This can prevent little problems from becoming big ones, and teaches children that the dentist is a friend who can keep their teeth looking and feeling good.

  What are Dental Sealants?

They are thin plastic coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth.  Dental Sealants are a wonderful preventive method because they protect the grooves of the back teeth and can prevent a lot of cavities.

Which areas of the county receive fluoridated drinking water?

Presently, customers served by the City of Wilmington and the Town of Wrightsville Beach receive fluoridated water.
