Typhoid
Typhoid fever is an acute, life-threatening febrile illness cause by the bacterium Salmonella enterica Typhi. Two typhoid vaccines are available. The injectable vaccine provides protection for two years and the oral vaccine consists of four tablets taken over a one week period and provides 5 years of protection. The oral vaccine cannot be taken with some anti-malarials or antibiotics. The amount of protection the two vaccines provide is comparable, but no vaccine is 100% effective. Typhoid is more prevalent in travelers who do not consume safe foods or beverages.
