Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention
The New Hanover County Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program initiates measures to protect young children in the community who are at the greatest risk for lead poisoning hazards. The Program is a coordinated effort of the Child Health, Nutrition, Laboratory, and Environmental Health programs. The Program screens over 2000 children annually, including children with elevated blood levels and lead poisoning.
A simple blood test can determine a child's blood lead level. Screening is recommended at 12 and 24 months of age, but a child up to 6 years of age may be tested at the Health Department anytime free of charge. Occasionally, more frequent testing is required due to risk factors or prior history of elevated test results and follow-up may be required.
Follow-up services for children with elevated blood lead levels are free of charge and may include home visiting by a nurse for education, environmental assessment of lead hazards, referrals for nutritional counseling, follow-up with physicians, developmental testing, and school planning support and referrals.
Laboratory hours are Monday - Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. |
