SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES

Chlamydia
Pain and burning when urinating. Discharge. Sometimes no symptoms. Lab test on fluid from infected area. YES Antibiotic pills that kill bacteria . Pelvic infection. Sterility.  May infect newborn.
Crabs (lice)
Severe itching. Look for lice in hair or on skin. YES Over the counter or prescription lotions. Itching continues and becomes steadily worse.

 

Genital Herpes
Red bumps/blisters in genital area . Pain when having sex. Pain when blisters are touched. Lab test on fluid from blister or sore. NOT CURABLE
Symptoms can be treated.
Pills and ointments. Symptoms last longer and are more severe.
Genital Warts
Bumpy warts on or near genitals. Look for warts on genitals.

 

NOT CURABLE
Symptoms can be treated.
Acid applications. Freezing warts. Burning warts, laser Greater risk of genital cancer. Warts get larger, multiply, may get irritated.
Gonorrhea
Sometimes no symptoms.  Genital discharge of yellow pus-like fluid, burning when urinating. Lab test of discharge or fluid. YES Antibiotic pills that kill bacteria . Pelvic infections, Sterility.  May affect joints and other body parts.
Hepatitis B
Flu-like symptoms, yellow skin, dark urine, clay colored stools. Blood test. NOT CURABLE
Symptoms can be treated.
Medication to treat the symptoms. Liver damage, liver cancer possible.
HIV disease
Often no symptoms occur. Flu-like symptoms-chills and fever, knots under skin, cough, weight loss. Blood test .

 

NOT CURABLE
Symptoms can be treated.
Drugs to slow the progress of the virus. Drugs to fight infections. Life threatening infections. Infections become more numerous and more often.
NGU
Sometimes no symptoms.  Discharge from penis.  Pain and burning when urinating. Lab test on discharge. YES Antibiotic pills that kill

 

bacteria.

Sterility. Inflammation of testes and prostate gland.
Syphilis
Often no symptoms are noticed. Chancre or open sore (painless), body rashes, spots on hands and feet. Blood test. Exam of fluid from sore. YES Injections of penicillin. Blindness, heart disease, liver disease, and brain damage.
Vaginitis
Itching around or in vagina, increased vaginal discharge. Odorous vaginal discharge. Lab test on discharge. YES Pills. Vaginal creams. Symptoms become more severe.
