 Used Tire Disposal

Used Tires Disposal Policy

General Public/Homeowners:

§  Residents of New Hanover County, in personal vehicles only, can dispose of up to five (5) tires per day free of charge.

§  Tires are accepted during normal operating hours (Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm and on Saturdays, 8:00 am to 11:45 am).

Commercial Business:

§  New Hanover County businesses must complete the required paperwork and call ahead in order to dispose of tires. The forms are used to document the origin and number of tires to be disposed for State auditing purposes.  Business owners must call ahead before bringing the tires to ensure there is sufficient space available for disposal.

§  Business owners who sell tires can haul their own tires without a scrap tire hauling license by using their State sales tax number (Businesses that contract tire hauling or do not sell tires see Scrap Tire Haulers section).

§  There is no tire disposal charge for businesses complying with this policy (see exceptions).

§  Call 910-798-4451 to request the required forms to be completed and with questions regarding the proper completion of the forms.  Forms must be completed before arriving at the landfill.

§  Tires are accepted Monday through Friday and must arrive no later than 3:.00 pm to begin off-loading.  Tires are not accepted on Saturdays unless special authorization has been granted by management.

Scrap Tire Haulers:

§  Scrap tire haulers hired to transport and dispose of tires from local tire dealers, etc. must obtain a scrap tire hauling license issued by the State.

§  If your business does not sell tires (example would be local government or non-profit) then you must obtain a scrap tire hauling license or contract with a licensed scrap tire hauler to transport and dispose of tires.

§  Contact the State tire program administrator at 919-508-8509 in order to obtain the scrap tire hauling license.  Licenses are free and must be renewed each year.

§  There is no tire disposal charge for tires disposed by scrap tire haulers as long as the required forms are completed properly and signed (see exceptions).

Forms are available at the bottom of this page.

Exceptions:

§  Tires originating from site clean-ups or land clearing, tires generated from businesses without the required paperwork/tire documentation, stockpiled tires, tires generated out-of-state, and tires from the general public in excess of five (5) per day will be accepted at a charge of $83.00/ton.  Please contact 910-798-4451 with questions.

§  Very large Off-Road or solid wall tires will be accepted free of charge if they are placed into tire trailers by the customer.  If such tires cannot be placed into the trailers by the customer then they will be accepted for disposal in the landfill at a charge of $83.00/ton.  Please contact 910-798-4451 with questions.
