New Hanover County Disposal Facilities Rules

It shall be unlawful to place waste in any place other than the designated area. Any attempts will be reported to the NC Department of Environmental and Natural Resources. Landfill users must unload only in the area designated by the Landfill Manager. The hauler and/or waste generator will be responsible for removal and clean-up of all wastes unloaded in an undesignated area.

Items Banned From Disposal

In accordance with policy and/or the Solid Waste Management Act of 1989 as amended (GS #130 A), it shall be unlawful to dispose of the following materials in the landfill or WASTEC:

  • whole tires (except solid forklift tires);
  • white goods / appliances;
  • lead acid batteries;
  • anti-freeze and waste oil from automobiles;
  • oil filters;
  • liquids and waste failing the "paint filter test" for free liquids;
  • hazardous waste as described in 40 CFR 258;
  • waste originating outside New Hanover County (unless by contract at WASTEC only);
  • construction/demolition waste in roll-off containers or dump trucks (only at WASTEC)
  • contaminated soils, volatile chemicals, etc.;
  • any container of greater than 5 gallons, unless perforated;
  • aluminum beverage containers;
  • yard waste, stumps, vegetative debris;
  • florescent fixtures unless ballast have been removed, florescent tubes except by residents with a limit of four bulbs per day per household;
  • gas tanks, gas cylinders (unless valve has been removed);
  • any other material deemed unlawful as described in the North Carolina Solid Waste Management Rules as amended.

Safety:

All users of the disposal facilities must obey all traffic signs, signals, and safety policies and procedures as established by the New Hanover County Department of Environmental Management. County personnel are not allowed to use chains, ropes, or similar devices to pull loads from customers vehicles.

Weigh Out Times:

Landfill customers must have all loads unloaded by the closing times of 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11:45 a.m. on Saturday.

Landfill Holiday Schedule:

The landfill will be closed on the following dates:

  • July 4
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Close at noon on December 24th
  • Christmas Day (December 25th) and  Day after Christmas (December 26th)
  • New Year's Day.

WASTEC will be open to receive combustible refuse only on each holiday. Cardboard will not be accepted on any nationally recognized holiday.
