WASTEC is New Hanover County's Waste-to-Energy Conversion facility located at 3002 U.S. Highway 421 North, approximately 3 miles north of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. The facility operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year combusting and converting solid waste into energy. The plant has the capability to generate over 600,000,000 pounds of steam and over 42,000,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year. WASTEC is the primary integrated solid waste management technique used by New Hanover County to reduce our dependence on the County Landfill.
Waste loads containing 85% or more of burnable materials should be delivered to WASTEC. Loads consisting primarily of nonburnable construction material including shingles and gypsum wall board should go to the Landfill.
