The New Hanover County Engineering Department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Counties water and sewer system, which currently services over 32,000 customers. The County operates one small wastewater treatment plant, 29 drinking water wells, 139 miles of water distribution piping, 109 sewage pumping stations, 83 miles of sewer force main and about 500 miles of sewer collection lines. The Department is currently overseeing the design, development and construction of 6 mgd, water treatment plant at an estimated cost of $30,040,000.

In addition, the Engineering Department administers the County's Storm water ordinance, local erosion program, various Capital projects, utility easement conveyances, utility and cemetery subdivision reviews, and provides administrative support for all commercial and residencial building permits, as well as the County's Alcholol Beverage Control license program.
The Engineering Department is under the supervison of the Interim County Engineer, Dennis Ihnat and Deputy County Engineer, Jim Craig and is currently staffed by 47 employees. The Department's 10 year Capital Improvements Program (CIP) identifies over $100 Million in projects over the next 10 years.
