Urban Horticulture Program
Utilizes the New Hanover County Arboretum to provide educational programming and
research on the selection, management and role of plants and ecosystems in the urban
landscape to protect our natural resources and improve the quality of life in urban
environments.
- Goals of the Urban Horticulture Program
- Select, trial and promote superior ornamentals for local growing conditions.
- Promote the use of plants for environmental enhancement including plants for
bioretention and rain gardens for stormwater treatment, habitat creation and
restoration, selection of low maintenance plant with minimal pest problems, and
use of plants for energy conservation.
- Develop educational displays in the Arboretum to demonstrate appropriate plant
selection for site conditions, new species and varieties, and environmentally friendly
landscape design and maintenance techniques.
- Produce and distribute educational materials about environmentally sound
horticultural practices and plant selection for the Cape Fear Area.
- Utilize local citizens in volunteer roles for the achievement of all of the above.
