Plant Clinic Hours are Monday - Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. in the Visitors Center.

The Plant Information Clinic is staffed by volunteers of the New Hanover County Master Gardener Program which has been in operation since the late 1970's and can be reached at 910-798-7679 or 910-798-7680.

The New Hanover County Master Gardener Program is first and foremost a volunteer educational program with the purpose of disseminating research based information to consumers. The Plant Information Clinic enhances the quality of life for the residents of New Hanover County by acting as a clearing-house for horticultural information. Accurate, research-based information is provided on subjects ranging from lawn fertilization to the safe and effective use of pesticides. By teaching and encouraging responsible use of garden chemicals we will have a profound beneficial effect on our environment. Visit us in the Plant Clinic, 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., located in the Hutaff Visitor's Center, and come out to the Arboretum to see what's growing in your community.

Successful plantings depend on putting the right plant in the right place. To help both homeowners and professionals to choose the right plants for landscapes in New Hanover County, the following lists have been created. All plants listed are hardy to Zone 8a, which has a minimum winter temperature of 10 – 15 degrees. Plants in these lists perform well under local climate conditions, are relatively easy to grow, and should be available from local nurseries and garden centers. Common names are listed first, though plants are arranged in alphabetical order by scientific name.

For more detailed information about each plant and to see images, visit the Plant Fact Sheets on the NC Cooperative Extension Consumer Horticulture website.
