Coastal Management Program

The coastal environment in North Carolina is prized for its diversity and natural beauty. Desired by many North Carolinians as a place to live, work, and raise their families, the 320 miles of shoreline bordering the Atlantic Ocean is one of the state’s most valuable resources.
The coast also supports North Carolina’s number one industry – tourism. The beach is the number one tourist destination in the state contributing millions of dollars to federal, state and local economies. This economic engine provides thousands of jobs for North Carolina. Real estate values of coastal property are among the highest in the state providing a substantial tax base for coastal counties.
With increasing numbers of visitors vacationing here, and more people moving to coastal North Carolina, the need for coastal management and conservation programs is also growing. The North Carolina Cooperative Extension is uniquely positioned to address these emerging needs and issues. Through public education programs and working with coastal municipalities and residents, Extension provides answers to meet the needs of coastal communities, residents, and visitors.
Programs currently offered to address coastal issues and needs include:

• Understanding the Beach and Dune System
• The Role of Vegetation to Build and Stabilize Coastal Dunes
• Dune Vegetation Planning for Coastal Communities
• Dune Vegetation Planning for Coastal Property Owners
• Dune Fertilization and Management
• Commercial Production of Native Dune Species
• Commercial Production of Estuary Species
• Dune Conservation Volunteer Program
• Home Landscaping on Barrier Islands
• Youth Programs for Elementary through High School Students
• Adult and Youth Programs for Civic Groups and Clubs
• Eco-tourism Education Programs
