Copies of Birth & Death Certificates

G.S.130A-26A(be)(1)  A person who commits any of the following acts shall be guilty of a Class 1 felony: Willfully and knowingly makes any false statement in an application for a certified copy of a vital record, or who willfully and knowingly supplies false information intending that the information be used in the obtaining of any copy of a vital record.

Certified copies of New Hanover County Birth and Death certificates may be obtained from the Vital Records Department, 216 North 2nd Street, Room 2.

You may now request a copy of a Birth or Death record and pay with your Visa or MasterCard by simply printing the NHC Copy of a Vital Record Application and filling out the requested information. After printing application place governmental issued ID such as a drivers license on space provided on page 2 and photocopy form.  Fax both pages to 910-798-7757.  Once order has been verified and processed you will be contacted to process payment.  Do not place any credit card information on authorization form that information will be taken over the phone when order is processed.

Only those births and deaths that occurred in New Hanover county are on file in this office.  (Click here for NC Vital Records).

Your drivers license or state issued picture ID is required to receive a certified copy.

See link below for applications to receive certified copies of birth and death certificates.  You may print the application and bring it with you when applying.

  • The fee for a Certified Copy of a Birth Certificate is currently $10.00 each.
  • The fee for a Certified Copy of a Death Certificate is currently $10.00 each.
