Voter Registration

You are eligible to register to vote and vote in New Hanover County if you are the following:

  • A citizen of the United States.
  • A resident of North Carolina and New Hanover County for 30 days prior to an election.
  • At least 18 years of age by the date of the next general election.
  • Not registered to vote in any other county or state.
  • Not a convicted felon.  If you are, your citizenship rights must be restored.
  • Timely in registering in your county of residence at least 25 days before an election.

NEW REGISTRATIONS must be on an application form. Registration forms are available in various locations throughout the county. See the table below for locations. You may also:

National Mail-In Voter Registration Form*

The National Mail Voter Registration Form (formulario nacional de inscripción de votantes) can be used to register to vote, report a change of name, report a change of address or register with a political party. The national form also contains voter registration rules and regulations for each state and territory

Federal Post Card Application is for US Citizens covered by UOCAVA (Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act).

* Please do not use the National form if you live outside the United States or its territories, and you do not have a home (legal) address in this country, or if you are in the military stationed away from home. Use the FPCA (Federal Postcard Application) available to you from military bases, American embassies, or consular offices.

Registration closes 25 days before an election.

Registration in New Hanover County is permanent. Upon receipt of your registration application by the board of elections office, it will be processed and a voter registration card will be sent to you verifying your address.

Voter ID: According to NCGS 163-166.12, Not all voters are required to present ID. Only first-time registered voters who registered by mail or by voter registration drive must present ID prior to the act of voting on Election Day. Except, those voters in this group which have submitted a correct drivers license number or last 4 digits of the social security number on the voter registration application for validation purposes. NOTE: THE DRIVERS LICENSE AND SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER MUST MATCH THE NAME ON THE CARDS EXACTLY IN ORDER TO VALIDATE.

Forms of ID accepted: 1) A Current and Valid Photo Identification 2) A copy of one of the following documents that shows the name and address of the voter; a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document.

If the voter is voting by mail-in absentee ballot, the mailed ballot without the required identification shall be treated as a provisional official ballot.

If you should move, your change of address should be reported to the board of elections at least 25 days prior to an election. This should be done in writing and must contain your signature. You may use the form on the back of your voter registration card to change your information. A new card will be mailed to you verifying your new information.

Your voter registration card will also inform you of your new voting place. Polling places are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on election days.
